Ann Whitney was a teacher that bravely died while protecting her students during a massacre. Whitney grew up in Plymouth County, MA before moving to TX, to become a teacher. She began working at the first school in Hamilton County to convene following the Civil War, a small private school in a log cabin. On July 9, 1867, Whitney was warned of the approaching horsemen, but assumed they were harmless. Upon riding into view, they began shooting arrows at the school to which Whitney responded by quickly rushing her students to safety before she was shot to death.
Whitney was buried in the Graves-Gentry cemetery of Hamilton, TX.
