Susan Warner was an author of fictional and theological works. Warner was born in New York City, NY, to a wealthy family. Following the death of her mother, and the loss of her father's fortune in the Panic of 1837, her family relocated to a Revolutionary War-era farmhouse on Constitution Island. In 1849, she began writing to earn income for her family. She used the pseudonym "Elizabeth Wetherell" to write thirty novels, including her most famous, "The Wide, Wide Word." She typically wrote on rural American life, and Christian teachings. She often co-wrote projects with her sister, Anna Warner, including Christian children's songs. They would also hold bible studies for the West Point cadets, and teach them songs.
Warner passed on March 17, 1885, and was buried in the West Point Cemetery.
