Alice Huckert Tubbs was a professional gambler and farmer, know for playing poker.
Tubbs was born Alice Ivers, in Devonshire, EN. Her family relocated to VA when she was twelve. In her late teens she attended boarding school in state. Tubbs began playing poker professionally early on in her life, particularly after her first husband's death. She began to draw in large crowds, and earned the nickname "Poker Alice." As her reputation grew, Tubbs brought in larger amounts of money. After the death of her second husband, she purchased a building located between Sturgis and Fort Meade. It was commonly referred to as "Poker Alice's resort" under her ownership. In 1913, a confrontation between Tubbs and Troop K soldiers stationed in the area broke out at the resort. After the soldier were refused admittance to the resort upon their intentions of starting a fight there, they began vandalizing the building. Tubbs responded by shooting at them, striking five individuals in the process. Upon the arrival of police, Tubbs was put under arrest and sent to jail. She was let go on account of her acting in defense of her property. She continued having run-ins with the law in the years following, and experienced multiple raids of her resort. Tubbs was later charged and convicted for operating a house of prostitution at the resort. In 1928, fans of Tubbs successfully petitioned for her pardon. Following her release, she experience no future interactions with the law.
Tubbs married Frank Duffield at a young age. Only a few years following, Duffield died in a tragic accident. She married her second husband, Warren G. Tubbs in about 1890. There are speculations on if they had any children, with some sources saying they had up to seven. After the passing of Duffield in 1909, Tubbs married her third husband, George Huckert. He passed in October of 1924. Tubbs passed on February 27, 1930, following a gallbladder operation. She was buried at the St. Aloysius Cemetery.
