Joanna Troutman was a seamstress that sewed a flag used in the Texas Revolution, given the title of the "Troutman flag."
Troutman was born in Baldwin County, GA. In 1835, Troutman designed a flag for the Georgia Battalion traveling to Texas. The flag was made of white silk, and featured a blue five pointed star, along with the inscriptions, "Texas and Liberty" and "Where Liberty dwells there is my country." The flag was officially unfurled in Velasco on January 8, 1836. The flag itself ended up torn to shreds with only its remnants flying above the battle.
Troutman married Solomom L. Pope in 1839. Together they had four sons. In 1875, following the passing of Pope, she married W. G. Vinson. Troutman passed on July 23, 1879, and was buried beside her first husband.
