Peggy Rockefeller was an active land conservationist. She was born Margaret McGrath, and attended three separate schools in her youth. Rockefeller founded two land conservation organizations during her career; the Maine Coast Heritage Trust and the American Farmland Trust. Rockefeller was a trustee of the New York Philharmonic from 1953 to 1970, and was a board member of the New York Botanical Garden. A two-acre rose garden in the botanical garden was restored in her honor in 1988, and named the "Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden."
