Red brick building with large white lettering on front. Built in 1879 by the Tabors.
The building is located in Leadville, CO. Upon its opening in 1879, the Tabor Opera House included two retail stores, a theatre on the second floor, and an enclosed skywalk to the Clarendon Hotel on the third. Tabor contributed greatly to its success, despite her husband Horace beginning an affair at the time of its construction. When Tabor's efforts to attend the opening were ignored, she moved on to suing Horace for maintenance and support, which was followed by their divorce shortly after, splitting Tabor from the opera house's earnings, though she had played a large role in its creation.
The Tabor became a widely respected opera house over the years, with many well known talents passing through. In 1893 it was purchased by Judge A.S. Weston and renamed the Weston Opera House which it operated under until 1901, when it was sold to Dr. J. H. Heron. From there until 1955 it served as The Elks Opera House, operating under The Leadville Elks Building Association and receiving a remodel.
In 1955, the Tabor Opera House was taken over by Evelyn Furman, who focused on celebrating its history over the course of her ownership which ran until 2016. That year, the City of Leadville purchased the building from Furman's daughter, Sharon Bland, through the use of grant money. The Tabor Opera House Preservation Foundation reorganized to rehabilitate the building as a place of gather for the community of Leadville.
