Embroidery and applique 9x12 foot tapestry. Features depictions of historical women and natural elements. created in 1976 by Eva Mackintosh, Carol Carpenter, Geraldine Merrill and Betsey Gottschalk.
The tapestry is located at the Colorado State Capitol in Denver, CO. The work was erected in honor of Colorado women, and includes representations of nineteen different historical woman of the state throughout the piece. The tapestry is titled "Women's Gold," after the practice of women bringing flowers and herbs from the east to their homes in the west for planting. Harison's Yellow Rose, a popular flower for this endeavor was referred to as, "women's gold" and is featured throughout the tapestry. Other elements include plants and wildlife native to Colorado and a running river, representative of Clear Creek, where gold was found in 1859.
Along the sides and top border of the tapestry are embroidered words of the poem, "America the Beautiful" by Katharine Lee Bates. Along the bottom border is an embroidered statement written by Mackintosh's son, Todd who was 15 at the time.
The tapestry not only honors the past, but looks toward the future, with the inclusion of a date range; 1876-2076. The first date acknowledges the year Colorado became a state, while the second prompts viewers to look toward the future of the state, in imaging what legacies of women will have developed and transpired over the next 100 years.
