The museum is located in Santa Fe, NM. It was founded in 1937 by anthropologist Wheelwright, in collaboration with Hastiin Klah, a Navajo ceremonial weaver and practitioner. The museum officially opened under the title of The Museum of Navajo Ceremonial Art in 1938, after the completion of its construction. It was built on land gifted by Amelia E. White.
During the 1970s, the museum underwent changes in practices and presentation. In 1975, the Case Trading Post opened, with a focus in showcasing Native artists work, as well as providing the museum with funding for their programs and exhibitions. In 1977, the Museum began processes of repatriation in regards to ceremonial items in their possession. They were one of the first museums in North America to do so voluntarily. During this time, the museum's name was changed to the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian.
In the 2000s, the museum opened their library building and collections store, where the Wheelwright Museum Archives are housed.
