Rectangular plaque featuring black background, white text, and images of discussed monument.
Bronze sculpture depicting three uniformed women supporting a wounded male soldier. Stood atop granite base. Created by artist Glenna Goodacre.
The monument is located on the National Mall in Washington, DC, about three-hundred feet from the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall. It was erected in honor of the thousands of women who served in the Vietnam War, highlighting their contributions and bravery. The monument's official dedication held on November 11th, 1993, was incorporated into a three-day Celebration of Patriotism and Courage held in DC from November 10-12th, 1993. The process of making this monument a reality lasted years. Many believed a monument honoring women was unnecessary. Two pieces of Congressional legislation and approval of three federal commissions had to occur before the project had final approval. This was the first memorial on the Mall of the Capital dedicated to women in military.
