Two-story white farmhouse with black shutters and brick chimney. Built in 1760.
The house is located in Hatfield, MA, and served as residence to Smith for the majority of her life. It came into possession of her father Joseph Smith in 1789, and she remained living there until shortly before her passing. Smith was founder of the nearby Smith College for women.
After her passing, the Smith College class of 1896 restored and furnished the house, utilizing many of its original pieces. A bronze plaque was also added to the front of the home by alumnae of Smith College marking it as the birthplace of Smith.
The home was purchased by the Smith College Alumnae Association in 1915 with the intentions of preserving the space and dedicating it to Smith's life there. In 1916 the restored house became officially open to the students, faculty and alumnae of Smith College as a place of rest and recreation.
The house has remained relatively the same since Smith's time there, with minor renovations including the removal of the back shed and the addition of a porch in the front.
