Francis W. Jacobs
1843 - 1892
She saw more people, face to face, in trouble of all sorts, than anyone in Denver.
If you saw a small woman give a bar of Grandpa’s Tar soap to an un-
washed or troubled person on Broadway Street in 1885, you can be as-
sured it was Frances Wisebart Jacobs Mother of Charities. The poor were
many, she was one. She tried to interest others in her work, organizing the
Ladies Relief Society and the
Organized Charities Society
which grew into the Community
Chest. Free kindergartens date
back to her efforts to get chil-
dren, especially from poor fami-
lies into school at an earlier
age. Eastern doctors urged
many victims of consumption (tuberculosis) to the fresh
air of Colorado and many came here on one last des-
perate move. Often broke, they could not afford medical
