Biographical Text
-
8 foot tall bronze statue depicting Hutchinson and one of her children, both wearing traditional 17th century clothes. The statue sits atop a stone pedestal which contains a bronze plaque.
The statue stands outside the Massachusetts State House. However, it faced backlash when it was originally proposed in the early 20th century. Hutchinson was seen as a controversial figure in Massachusetts history (as she was a dissenter against the Puritan faith during the early days of the colony). Contention continued for years regarding the State accepting to pay for the bronze statue after the plaster was revealed. After several months of contention in 1922, it was finally placed where it now stands on July 5, 1922.
