Granite headstone denoting the grave belonging to Hurston with birth and death dates. Contains a photograph of Hurston. Coins have been thrown on the grave ledger, which does not have any writing on it. The headstone is nestled in small bushes. A small white fence encircles the grave.
Hurston is buried in the Garden of Heavenly Rest Cemetery in Florida, which was once segregated. She was originally buried in an unmarked grave after dying in a welfare home. However, Alice Walker located her grave and created a marker in 1972. The birthdate on her headstone is incorrect as Hurston was born in 1891, not 1901.
