100 limestone boulders deposited on the streets of Chicago, each bearing a plaque with the names of women significant to Chicago.
This public art installation was created in 1993 by Suzanne Lacy and a coalition of Chicago women. On the night of May 19, 100 boulders appeared on the streets and sidewalks of Chicago. The goal was to honor women in a city where there were no major monuments to women. Ten of the boulders honored women who historically had significant cultural and political impact in Chicago, and ninety of them honored women who currently had significant cultural and political impact. The rocks were sourced from a female-owned rock quarry in Oklahoma.
The stones were removed in September and recycled, with the plaques being represented to the honorees.
