Brick school building.
Several schools had been built on the site since 1882. The Longfellow School was built on the site in 1882. Upon her arrival to Denver, Griffith was inspired to create a technical school for adults and in 1916, was given the decrepit Longfellow School in which to open her “Opportunity School.” Over the entrance of the school hung a sign stating “For All Those Who Wish to Learn.”
In 1926, the Main Education building was built on the southern edge of the site. In 1934, the school was renamed the “Emily Griffith Opportunity School” in her honor. The original Longfellow School was eventually demolished for more expansion and the 1947 and 1956 additions were added. In 2011, the school was renamed to the “Emily Griffith Technical College” and it now charges tuition, which it did not do when Griffith originally founded it.
