Granite headstone denoting Goldman’s birth and death dates, as well as a quote. The stone features a bronze bas relief of Goldman’s portrait.
Goldman is buried near the Haymarket Monument, alongside other radical labor activists. Although met with controversy, permission was given for her to be interred in the United States, even though she had been barred from living in the country. The bronze relief was sculpted by Jo Davidson. The grave inaccurately reports both Goldman’s birthdate and date of death. Her birthdate is written as June 29, 1869, yet Goldman was born June 27, 1869. Furthermore, her date of death is written as May 14, 1939, but Goldman actually died May 14, 1940. Over time, visitors to Goldman’s grave would write messages on the headstone either in support or criticism of her political ideology, including messages such as seen in this image that read “Smash the State.”
