Bronze plaque describing the Black Angel statue.
The Black Angel statue was sculpted by Daniel Chester French. It honors Dodge and commemorates her death. The Black Angel is inspired by a dream French is said to have had three nights before her death in 1916. In the dream, Dodge was on a rocky shore and approached by a small angel who offered her a drink. The dream occurred for three nights in a row, and on the third night, Dodge took a drink. She died soon after. The statue was commissioned by Dodge’s daughters in 1920. The statue depicts an angel with widespread wings, offering a bowl from which water flows. The monument is on the National Register of Historic Places.
The monument was restored in 1984.
