Biographical Text
-
Brick building containing displays celebrating women of the past and present whose legacy left an impact on the history of the American West.
The museum was started in 1975 in the basement of the Deaf Smith County Library in Hereford, Texas. It seeks to honor and celebrate the legacy of the women who shaped the west. 261 honorees of the hall of fame are remembered at this museum.
In 1994, the museum and the hall of fame moved to Fort Worth, Texas. In 2002, the museum moved to its current structure. The current structure, designed by David M. Schwarz is meant to feel western in its appearance and inspired by the cowgirl. It is decorated with wild-rose motifs and a mural by Richard Haas showing life in the West. Other construction efforts have continued such as the renovation of the first floor in July 2015 and the consequent renovation of the second floor in March 2019. A 16,000 square foot, $19 million expansion is currently being constructed and is expected to be complete in November 2026. In recent years, the museum has made more of an effort to highlight women of color and highlight diversity in the American West.
