Biographical Text
-
Stone studio with log timbers in the style of 12th century southwestern Native American houses and villages.
Colter herself was the architect and designer of the studio. In designing the building, Colter wanted it to be representative of the region, therefore the roofline and chimneys mimic the uneven nature of the bedrock. Since its creation, the studio has served as a place where tourists can lookout into the Grand Canyon and enjoy the views.
The original ceiling treatment, which was most likely made of saplings to mimic native architecture, has since been covered by sheetrock. Furthermore, fluorescent lights have been added to the studio.
