Biographical Text
-
210 foot tall, concrete column shaped building in the Art Deco style.
The Coit Tower was built with money given to the city of San Francisco by Coit following her death in 1929. Inside the tower’s base are twenty five murals painted by local artists, employed by the Public Works Project, and depict life in California during the Depression. However, some of these murals were deemed “too radical” and were painted over. The tower also serves as a memorial to city’s volunteer fire fighters who lost their lives in San Francisco’s five fires. The tower has been an iconic part of San Francisco’s skyline since its construction.
