The statue, sculpted by Theodora Alice Ruggles Kitson, depicts Bickerdyke as a Civil War nurse, holding a cup of water to the lips of a soldier. The sculpted statue is made of bronze and sits on a granite pedestal. It is located on the lawn of the Knox County Courthouse.
From shortly after Bickerdyke’s death in 1901 to 1903, the women of the Mother Bickerdyke Memorial Association raised money and worked with the state of Illinois to have the statue created. The statue was erected in Galesburg, Illinois, because of Bickerdyke’s former residence in the city, where she remains a significant historical figure. - Text
