This memorial statue depicts Bethune passing a scroll to two young children. The sculpture of Bethune and the children is made of bronze. It sits atop a pedestal. It is located in Lincoln Park in Washington D.C.
The statue was unveiled on July 10, 1974, on the 99th anniversary of Bethune’s birth. Funds to create the statue were raised by the National Council of Negro Women.
This memorial was the first to honor an African American built on public land in Washington D.C. and the first statue of an American woman on a public site in the city. - Text
