Laura Jane was born to Richard Drew and Sarah Musser in Little Falls Minnesota. She was homeschooled until her seventh year. She then attended private school and graduated from Central High School in 1933. She attended Hartridge School and then Monticello College from 1934-1937. She moved to New York City until her mothers death in 1953. While living in New York Laura lived in an international house, where she met many foreign students and became interested in race quality and tolerance.
