Sarah Kemble Knight was a teacher and businesswoman who was remembered for her diary of her journey from Boston, Massachusetts to New York City. She was born in Boston to Thomas Kemble, a sea merchant and Elizabeth Trerice. When she composed the journal, Sarah was 38 years old and a keeper of a boarding house in Boston. She also had experience as a court scrivener. She journeyed from Boston to New York to settle her friends estate issues. Her journal entries gave first-hand accounts of travel conditions in Connecticut during colonial times. Her diary was undiscovered until 1825 when it was published as "The Journal of Mme. Knight".
Sarah was married to Richard Knight in 1689 and had a daughter named Elizabeth. in 1703 however, Richard passed away leaving Sarah to take full responsibility of her household. In 1706 she opened a boarding house and was a school teacher. Towards the end of her life, Sarah spent time with her daughter Elizabeth in New London, managing a tavern and owning an inn. She was also always buying and selling land. Sarah became a respected member of the church and passed away at the age of 62 in London.
