Mary Jemison was born in 1743 to Thomas and Jane Jemison aboard the ship "William and Mary". Her family owned a farm in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where her and her siblings lived. In 1755, a raid party of six Shawnee Indians and four Frenchmen captured Mary and another young boy from another family. Her family was killed and she was forcefully adopted by two Seneca women who renamed her "Deh-he-wä-nis". During the Revolutionary War, Mary greatly helped Joseph Brant also known as Mohawk, who fought rebel colonists.
When Mary was of age, she married a Delaware man named Sheninjee. They had a son, Thomas named after Mary's father. Sheninjee died while hunting. Mary was remarried to a Seneca named Hiokatoo. They then had seven children named, Nancy, Polly, Betsey, Jane, John, Thomas, and Jesse. Mary passed away in 1833 at age 90. - Bibliography
