- Ruth M. Gardiner was a Second Lieutenant nurse in the United States Army, known for being the first nurse to die in action during World War II. Gardiner immigrated to the United States in 1917 and graduated from a sanatorium in White Haven, PA in 1934. She served during World War II on various medical evacuation aircrafts. Gardiner died at age 29 in a plane crash during a mission with the 805th Medical Air Evacuation Transport Squadron in Naknek, AK.
