Ice Cream Cone Mandrel An ice cream cone mandrel, ca. 1920s, from Doumar Ice Cream. One story behind the ice cream cone was that Abraham Doumar and Ernest A. Hamwi collaborated during the 1904 World's Fair to stuff a Persian waffle with ice cream. Afterwards Doumar continued the idea, shaping thin waffles into cones and selling them on the East Coast. The Doumar family donated this metal-tipped mandrel to the Smithsonian in the 1990s. Using the tip, the cone maker lifts the thin, browned waffle off the waffle plate and wraps it around the mandrel to make the classic cone shape.
